Canary Islands Regional Holiday

Canary Islands Regional Holiday 2025 and 2026

On 30 May in Spain’s Canary Islands, it’s Canary Islands Regional Holiday. The holiday is also called Day of the Canary Islands of just Canary Islands Day for short. If it falls on or near a weekend, the holiday may be observed on the following Friday or Monday in order to create a long weekend.

The date was chosen because on 30 May 1983 the Canary Islands’ parliament met for the first time. This reflected the newly granted “autonomous community” status within Spain that had been gained by the Canary Islands.

Canary Islands Day celebrates the culture and history of these Atlantic Islands. There are school parties and educational sessions dedicated to teaching students the history of their home region. These may occur in the lead-up to 30 May, while street parties and private parties occur on 30 May itself or on the evening of 29 May.

Many also attend special church services, sporting events, cultural food-tasting events, animal shows, music concerts, arts and crafts exhibits, and cattle sleigh-pulling displays. You will see the flag of the Canary Islands flying proudly over public buildings and private homes on Canary Islands Day. The flag consists of a vertical tricolour of white, blue, and yellow with two dogs, a shield, and a crown in the centrally-positioned coat of arms.
