Spain celebrates Mother’s Day on the first Sunday of May like many other countries around the world. It is a widely held observance, even though it lacks official public holiday status. And the fact that all Sundays are regarded as off-days anyway is part of why it is not an official public holiday here in Spain.

Mother’s Day sometimes falls on 1 May and thus coincides with May Day or Labour Day. But the presence of Labour Day nearby almost always results in a long weekend around Mother’s Day.
People in Spain generally attend church services, give Mum flowers or another gift, tell Mom “I love you”, and enjoy a special family meal for Mother’s Day. Oftentimes, Mum gets breakfast in bed or is taken out to a restaurant so she doesn’t have to cook as usual. Some families these days also treat their mother to a “spa day” or other special experiences.
